EFFICACY OF USING FUNGUS (Aspergillus niger) AS AN ANTAGONIST AND SYNTHETIC NEMATICIDE (FURADAN) IN THE MANAGEMENT OF Meloidogyne incognita in OKRA
Abstract
The experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of Aspergillus niger and synthetic nematicide (furadan) in the control of Meloidogyne incognita population in okra. The experiment was located at Afugiri in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria. The pot experiment consisted of four treatments replicated five times each laid out in completely randomized design (CRD). Each pot received 2000 nematode eggs which served as inoculums. The treatments used included the following combinations: Fungi and Nematode; Furadan, Fungi and Nematode; Furadan alone, which served as control. Results obtained showed that number of galls, nematode eggs in roots and juveniles in soli were drastically reduced (P<0.05) compared to the number of nematode eggs inoculated which indicates the effectiveness of the treatments used. However, no significant difference was observed in plant height and number of leaves. Fungi and nematode treatment compared favorably with treatment furadan and nematode and can be harnessed as a measure to manage the problem of plant parasitic nematode in okra production. Keywords:
