Abstract

The study was carried out to review the Nigerian government initiatives or policies formulated and injected into the rice subsector over the years to encourage increased rice production and attainment of self-sufficiency. The databank of the national Bureau of Statistics and information from relevant departments in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture were utilised. The study appraised the performance of government initiatives or policies over the years in the rice subsector, established policy gaps and proffer complementary or alternative policy measures by which increased rice production and attainment of self-sufficiency can be achieved.
